It’s the main conclusion team Arkea-Samsic will draw from the second stage of the Tour of Catalunya: Warren Barguil, 13th in Sant Feliu de Guixols, is feeling good. He ended a stage well mastered by his team mates in convincing fashion. Tomorrow he will be testing his legs in a mountainous finale.
Warren Barguil : «It was very windy, it was not an easy day but the whole team did a great job. In the finale, I felt good, I was following Matthews closely, we knew they were going to go for a sprint for him. Until the final kilometre the peloton was stretched, I was well positioned, then the pace went down. The bunch got back together and I found myself too close to the barriers, I had to hit the brakes a little and I lost slid back. A top 10 was possible but I’m happy that I contested the sprint, it good for self-confidence. Today it was important to be well positioned and tomorrow the legs will do the talking, the effort will be more intense, longer, we will see how my body reacts.”
Yvon Ledanois : « Warren Barguil was well today and he was in the miw in the finale with Kevin Ledanois. As expected the race was nervous, tense at times because of the wind but everything went well. We asked our riders to be vigilant and they did just that, especially in the climb that came just before a fast descent before the finish. In that kind of finish Warren can expect to be between fifth and 10th. He must feel reassured today. It was a finish for the strong guys after a very demanding opening stage and those who are in form are already up there in the GC with the peloton being already tired. This Tour of Catalunya will be an elimination race and for Warren every day without an incident is a god day. Andre Greipel could not follow in the climb on the circuit but we all expected that. He did the job for his team mates. He is the first to sacrifice himself when he knows the finale is not for him. He is an exemplary man.”
