The fifth stage of the Tour of Catalunya didn’t have a pre-written script : long breakaway, sprint, reduced-bunch sprint, all the options were on the menu. At the top do the first climb, four riders jumped away and our team, with the help of Team Sunweb and Dimension Data, took control. In the final ascent, our sprinter slipped down a few places and a crash six kilometres from the finish split the bunch in two. Andre Greipel did not contest the sprint. The rest of the peloton could not catch the only man in front, Schachmann, and sprinted for second.
André Greipel : “All the climbs were tackled st full speed because the breakaway riders were strong. I hung up in there. Hats off to my team mates, thanks to their work we almost got the massive sprint we wanted. I feel sorry for them that I wasn’t at my best today. I had just been dropped when the crash occurred and I could not get back. It was a tough day, like every day on the Tour of Catalunya. Everyone gives everything every day, I’m disappointed I cannot deliver the result we were here to get.”
Yvon Ledanois : “We worked to set up a sprint for Andre Greipel but that did not happen. Six kilometres from the finish there was a crash and the peloton was split in two in front of Andre who had just slipped back in the peloton. But we worked all day. When the breakaway’s advantage reached 3:40 we took our responsibilities. Warren showed the way, he worked very hard and we almost reined them in. My guys did a great job until the incident. I’m disappointed for them it if we continue in this direction we will finally get something to cheer about. A lot of World Tour teams came to thank us and it’s gratifying. There will be better days, no doubt about it. ”
