Team Arkea-Samsic has been granted one of the two remaining invitations for the Tour de France by Amaury Sport Organisation. On July 6 in Brussels they will start their sixth consecutive Tour with two leaders, Warren Barguil and Andre Greipel, who have a combined 13 stage wins to their name on the Grande Boucle. They will also rely on riders who will be eager to make a name for themselves, like Elie Gesbert.
Emmanuel Hubert: “I first want to thank Amaury Sport Organisation for their invitation for the greatest cycling race in the world. It was not easy to get selected, we were focused on this in the first part of the season but it was a healthy competition. Now we have to honour this selection and reach our goals – for ourselves, our sponsors and our fans. We will show our character. Warren Barguil gave France a lot of emotions in 2017 before having a tough season. On Paris-Nice he was ready, it was just a temporary setback. Warren has had a lot of accidents in his career and every time he came back stronger. It’s that capacity to bounce back that makes the champions. We strengthened the squad over the Winter with the arrival of Andre Greipel. He has one goal, which is to add another Tour win to his name. He brings a lot of calm in the squad in the good and in the bad moments. It’s in difficult times that you write the most beautiful sports pages. Riders and staff work hard to be up to the challenge. We will bring our contribution to this big party that the Tour de France is.”
Warren Barguil: “I’ve been up and down emotionally for a week now. I was told I had sustained a serious injury (double cervical fracture) before being diagnosed with just a sprain. Our selection for the Tour is great news. It was hard to watch Paris-Nice on TV, The Tour brought me a lot. In 2017, I had three dream weeks and the dream went on thanks to the fans. In 2018 I did not win and everything was more complicated. But I never gave up. Just before Paris-Nice I went on a training camp by myself to check the col de Turini and I worked long hours. I wanted to perform on this climb. Without me, the team was on the attack and they showed I could count on a solid squad. They say the hardest is to confirm, I’m working on it! On the 2019 edition we will have to climb up the Tourmalet, the Iseran, the Galibier and the Izoard… what a programme ! I’m really happy we will be there, we will have cards to play every day. See you in July !”
Andre Greipel: “I was on the bike when I got the news, it’s fantastic, not just for me but for the whole team and the sponsors. Last year, I took a chance when I joined Arkea-Samsic, I wasn’t sure I would ride the Tour de France and in the beginning of the season I did not bring the results that were expected from me. It did not have any negative consequences, I can promise that I will continue to try my bets on every race. The Tour de France has always been a dream for me and I have often performed there. Last year I was disappointed not to reach Paris and not to win a stage. I am happy to be back on the greatest race in the world to give everything and get a good result. I feel lucky that I will discover the Tour riding for a French team., I think we will get a lot of support. When you have a wild card, you have to show that you deserve it, just like we did on Paris-Nice. Warren is a great rider, I know he can do something great. I hope I will be in good shape to give my best for the team.”
Arkea-Samsic on the Dauphine
