The first of three mountain stages at the Critérium du Dauphiné was a test for Warren Barguil. The Arkéa-Samsic team leader was satisfied with his performance after finishing with the best just under seven minutes from the three breakaway riders.
Warren Barguil : “I’m satisfied with my ride. It was not the scenario we expected, we thought a dozen riders, including one of ours, would break away. But they were only three with a big gap that made it impossible to rein them in. Today I’m reassured after an under-per performance on the TT. I finish with a small group I favourites, I’m getting there but there are still two big days ahead where I will test myself.”
Yvon Ledanois, sports director : “the stage went well for us. I asked the guys to get into the breakaway and they followed every move before De Marchi, Alaphilippe and Mühlberger went ahead in the first of eight climbs. When you see their pedigree, it’s high level. So to that regard we don’t have any regrets. The peloton did not ride full gas and there was a big temperature change as we got rain and then a very hot finale. In the last climb, there was a natural selection and Warren stayed with the first group. He told me he was satisfied. They are only 20 riders left in that group and he said he felt best in the last ascent to the col de Beaune. These are big efforts after 200km on the saddle. It’s good that our leader stayed with the best. Tomorrow is the hardest day, the queen stage and it will be another test for Warren.
