Bram Welten took second place in the Route Adelie after a well-mastered race by Team Arkea-Samsic. Our 22-year-old sprinter is continuing his meteoric rise !
Bram Welten : “I’m happy with the result but when you get so close you want to win. This season I have been improving step by step. I had a top 10, a top 5, a top 3. This second place gives me a lot of confidence for the races to come, I know I can win. Today, Maxime Daniel started to control the peloton early on and the guys protected me well, we all stuck together. It was hard to control things in the finale, there were a lot of attacks but Elie and Laurent were vigilant, we didn’t want to be caught off guard. After the last climb I was the best option and I had to deliver.
I wanted a good result for myself but also for the guys who did a super job. I trusted my guts, I started to sprint far from the line. Just before the last bend I told myself that I had to go. I knew it was a bit early but I wanted to take them by surprise. Marc Sarreau jumped on my wheel and managed to pip me on the line but next time I’ll be the one beating him (laughter). While I was sprinting I thought about one thing only, victory, but I could see the line was so far… this is an important race for the team because it’s close to our service course and what’s important to the team is important to me. Even if I always start a race to win it. I always need a few races to peak and Paris-Nice was my springboard. I talk a lot with Andre, I watch what he does and I learn.”
