Yvon Caër: "Matîs just misses the breakaway”

The 2021 edition of the Brussels Cycling Classic has been won by Evenepoel, Bram Welten takes 14th place in the sprint.

Yvon Caër, Sport-Director

The debrief

“Bram had a chain break in the sprint, otherwise he could have finished in the top 10. But the biggest regret we can have is about Matîs, because when the good move starts he is only fifty meters behind Evenepoel, but he can never close the gap because of his bad placement during the climb of the Mur de Grammont. This is what cost him his place in the breakaway. These are also mythical places of our sport that you have to learn, and Matîs is still in the learning phase on these events. I would also like to underline the good work of Dayer and Lukasz who have placed the riders that we had designated as protégés before the two climbs of the Mur de Grammont. Our two trainees Yannis and Mathis also did a good job for the team, they rode at the front of the peloton to try to reduce the gap. We put them in this way to encourage other teams to come with us, because there were still fifty kilometres to go and only one minute and ten seconds of gap separated us from the breakaway. Unfortunately, we didn’t get much support from the other teams who were not represented at the front of the race. But our work was not in vain because in the final part of the race, the peloton almost came back on the heels of Philippe Gilbert’s group who fought for third place”.
