“The stage was fast and hard from start to finish. But we rode together in the peloton, Simon, Cristián and me. I tried to do my best in the sprint, taking the best wheels possible. I finish in 6th place, after a complicated day that was quite selective”.
The debrief
“Clément Champoussin finishes with the best on this 5th stage, which was very hard fought and very fast, with two Soudal-Quickstep riders in front, one of them being well ranked in the general classification. He finished with the best, tipping over at the top of the last climb with 23 riders. We are getting closer to the top 5 step by step, as he finishes 6th. Our wish is to conclude this event on a good note, on the occasion of the 6th stage of this week long UCI WorldTour race. The group is also homogeneous with Simon and Cristián in the second group, thirty seconds behind the leading group. We are on the right track in this Itzulia Basque Country. The main thing now is to stay focused, because tomorrow the riders will have to face a very difficult course”.
